Fences, a play by August Wilson, is set in the 1950s and centers around Troy Maxson, a former baseball player turned garbage collector, who grapples with the limitations imposed on him by racial discrimination and his own personal flaws. Troy's bitterness over missed opportunities affects his relationships, particularly with his wife, Rose, and his son, Cory. He is both a provider and a flawed patriarch who builds emotional and physical "fences" to keep others at a distance.

As Cory pursues a football career, Troy's unresolved issues and resentment threaten to stifle his son’s dreams, leading to a deep conflict between them. The play examines themes of family, duty, generational conflict, and the struggle for identity and self-worth in a society marked by racial inequality.
